Rob: Added info on planes for the money maker

The Cashmaker is the name for the network built at the beginning of every coop-game. Typically, the most profitable cargo is transported (i.e. coal).

Only few terrain-changes are done and the tracks are unorganized to save money and to earn as fast as possible enough cash to start with building the regular network. Hubs are typically quick-and-dirty (see Ghetto Style Hubs) except near the primary drop. An inefficient hub is typically tolerable as the added delays are tolerable and the network is not near capacity and unlikely to jam. Not only are goods like coal increasingly profitable for longer runs, they are relatively insensitive to delays.

In most recent games, the trend has been to use planes to transport passengers to generate money. Planes generate much more money than the slow coal trains. In addition, this prevents the map from getting overloaded by a very high production of coal. When using planes to generate money, the minimum terraforming rule still applies. Pick a few high population cities that are far away from each (opposite ends of the map if possible), and build an airport. Add just enough airplanes so that they are not sitting around waiting for passengers, and let the money roll in.

PZ Archive Proposal
I propose that in addition to the standard archive for ProZone games, each game would have a wiki article written about it. I expect that PZ games will be fewer in number, and more detailed, than our public server games, so the overhead of the extra wiki page should not be too extreme. Additionally, the level of communication expected of PZ builders is higher than average, so all should be willing to share their thoughts on the game.

The purpose of the wiki article is to provide players with greater detail about the game's purpose, it's problems, and it's potential. By highlighting specific areas of the game, we can use the experience of the builders to educate the community on proper building styles, new concepts, special constructions, and other advanced topics that may not be apparent when loading the savegame. We could discuss how we decided upon the plan, what worked, what didn't, and what changes we had to make to address problems that arose.

For example, let's say that PZ does an ECS game. The plan calls for single drop stations for all cargo types. When the incoming cargo becomes too much for the station (due to a low production rate at that industry), we have to do something else with it. The wiki article will discuss what choices we made, why we made them, and what we might want to try in the future. That way, the next time we do an ECS game, new and old PZ members can have access to this article, learn in advance what kinds of problems arise, and then work to improve upon the previous game.

Each article would contain screenshots of important locations in the game, including new station and track designs, wonderfully (or awfully) made hubs, interesting eye-candy, or anything else worth screenshotting. All builders would be encouraged (and expected) to provide their viewpoint on the game in this article. Of high importance would be a "What I would have done differently?" section, where each builder would provide information on one or more problems they ran across and answer the question.

Thoughts? -- Thraxian 19:40, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

:This sounds like a great idea, Thraxian. It would be simple enough to add an auto-generated link to the template that would go to a dedicated "post mortem" page for that game. If no one objects, I could add that very easily.

:However, we still need to know where the pro-zone games will be stored when they are archived. I don't know where the games are so I can't fix the template to link to them. --Rob 17:06, 22 September 2008 (UTC)

This article is a reference to the different types of communication expected to be used in coop server games.

Communication is not restricted to only the IRC and in-game chat, but through the proper use of signs, station names, and other in-game tools, players can convey information to each other. Using the formats displayed below will ensure that players can easily find information they need and that we are all consistent in our communication.

Sign List
The sign list displays an alphabetical list of all the signs in the game. To ensure that important signs are placed at the top of the list, it is common to add spaces at the front of the sign. These spaces cause the sign to float to the top of the list (spaces are alphabetically before "A").

The following conventions should be used when placing signs in coop games:

Notes:
* To improve readability on the wiki, underscore characters ("_") are used in place of spaces. Be sure to use spaces when making the actual sign.
* trailing spaces are optional, but help make the sign symmetrical

Game-Specific Signs use 2 spaces, 2 exclamation marks, 1 space, text, 1 space, 2 exclamation marks, 2 spaces
* __!!_MESSAGE BOARD_!!__
* __!!_NETWORK PLAN_!!__
* __!!_VOTING BOARD_!!__

Hubs use 2 spaces, hubname (BBH or SLH with two-digit number), 1 space, author (slash followed by name)
* __BBHxx_/author
* __SLHxx_/author

Other signs:
* Todo Signs should use .... (need notation for this. Possibly prefix with "_+")
* Problem Detection Signs should use 1 space, exclamation mark, description of error. Sometimes the error might just point out something bad, like _!BAD or _!needs balancer. Something is considered to be bad if it is not following building guidelines as posted throughout the Wiki. Other signs might have a simple description followed by several other signs explaining what is wrong or how it can be fixed.

* _!Jam
* _!Fix Signals
* _!Prio Broken

Station Names
All major stations should be named using a specific format. Major stations include the stations marked on the plan as drop/pickup stations, as well as major transfer stations (like pax ICE terminals). Other stations (like primary industries) can optionally use a prefix to assist in sorting.

Major Stations use 1 space, industry type in all caps, 1 space, optional identifier and 1 space, PICKUP or DROP
* _FACTORY_PICKUP
* _OIL_NORTH_DROP
* _GOODS_MYTOWN_DROP

ICE Terminals use 1 space, then a 3-character city identifier, and an optional directional indicator
* _DNW
* _CRF NORTH

Minor Stations can optionally use a prefix to group them together (no leading spaces), or a suffix to indicate cargo type, and are typically mixed-case
* Author:StationName
* SL##:StationName
* Fruntleigh_North_Livestock

Train Groups
Trains may be grouped according to cargo type, route (especially with ICE), or other criteria. The group names should be self-explanatory. When cloning a train, the new train will belong to the same group as the one it was cloned from.

* __!!_MESSAGE BOARD_!!__
* __!!_NETWORK PLAN_!!__

(The wiki bullets look really odd when combined with the template. Maybe the padding is the culprit? Without the padding, though, you the orange doesn't extand far enoug past the text, and it looks odd.)

Hubs use 2 spaces, hubname (BBH or SLH with two-digit number), 1 space, author (slash followed by name)

Help Please!
Apparently, styles in tables don't work in templates.

Additionally, I don't have access to edit the Common.css to place this style in a class and try using the class instead.

Could someone with access rights please take the included style tag from this template and create a class named "sign" or "coopsign" in the CSS. Hopefully, I can then use the tag to create openttd-style signs on the wiki page using this template.

FYI, I tried using a div, but the wiki is greedy and makes the div use 100% width. Instead, I'd like the sign to be as big as it needs to be to hold the text (just like in-game), and a table appears to work well for that. I opted to use the HTML format because then it can be placed in bulleted lists. Wiki tables require the open brace in the first column, which is impossible to do if you are using an asterisk in that column to include the sign in a bulleted list.
: Hi Thrax, I am not sure if div elements are the best idea. IMHO we should use span, because they are better to format text only. But I am also not sure if it'll fit your needs. I changed your user abilities, you should now be able to edit Common.css or MediaWiki:Monoforcoop2.css --Osai 13:39, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
Thanks -- Thraxian 01:46, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

:Designing templates is difficult, as the changes do not show up until you save the template. When I work with MediaWiki templates, I usually design them in a normal page so I can see how they look. Then when they look good, I copy them over into the template page. FWIW I do a lot of work on another MediaWiki site that makes extensive use of templates, so I've got a bit of experience working with them. Not necessarily 100% XHTML compliant, but I generally know how to make MediaWiki show what I want it to show. --Rob 15:30, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

:Also, you were using three sets of brackets when calling the template. You invoke the template with only two sets of brackets. When designing the template, three sets of brackets determine where to put the user-supplied data. I took the liberty of fixing your template. I hope you don't mind. I removed the div stuff and put the style info right into the td tag. --Rob 15:34, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

:Easy, yes. But they are submitted for completeness. Additionally, players new to OpenTTD and presignalling may not have seen it or understood this type of station before. Many public servers have terminus stations that are very different from this one, and don't work as cleanly as they could. Thraxian 01:35, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
:Okay. Sounds like we are going to create a complete compendium. I like it. --Osai 16:40, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

I see a little problem on Osais Terminus Stations, there is a bridge before split, I guess, we did other way on working games... --Ammler 22:31, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
:I agree that the bridge on the entrance is a problem. The extended terminus design takes care of that problem when there is a queue of trains coming in. For a less-used station, the added spacing between the trains as they enter due to the bridge could be problematic. It may also be possible to double the bridge entrance, but that will lead to a lot of stop-and-go also once the platforms are filled. --Thraxian 19:53, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

To pick another nit: The Standard Terminus and Extended Terminus can be made a bit more efficient by moving the center two platforms to the west by 3 tiles. This will stagger the station, like this:
<pre>----------XXXX
-------XXXX
-------XXXX
----------XXXX</pre>
It's a minor improvement, but does raise the throughput a little, and every bit helps in a terminus station layout.--Rob 16:36, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

About me
Hello. Welcome to my little user page. My name is Rob. I use the nick Veritek on IRC, but just use Rob in-game and here on the wiki.

I have only been playing OpenTTD for a couple months, but I was a huge Railroad Tycoon fan. OpenTTD is an amazing game. Creating vast and complex train networks is inherently fascinating to me, and I throughly enjoy the large and intricate network created by #openttdcoop. Cooperative gaming is my favorite style of game play. I also enjoyed the shared track style being tested for wwottdgd2.

Part of the game I also like is adding eyecandy to stations, and making things look more functional. Some of the stuff I have done can be seen in the screenshots for Public Server games 94, 93, 89, and 87.
