Later in the game we were limited by OTTD production limit of secondaries, which is roughly 2295 per industry tile per month. Later in the game we were limited by OTTD production limit of secondaries, which is roughly 2295 per industry tile per month. For factories, it means 27,540 crates of goods per month - so we had to build four factories and balance them well. We managed to accomplish our goal in 2177.

<< INACURATE >>
Please wait for page to be redone

Road stations typically take a back seat to rail stations in #openttdcoop games. Railways have much higher capacities than roadways and trains move much faster than trucks and buses. However, road stations (especially when properly used) can be used to improve parts of a network where a train would be overkill.

2 Key Points
Firstly, since the RoRo road stations were introduced it is much better to use these than terminus stations. A terminus road station is as inefficient as a standard terminus rail station. 1 vehicle may enter and leave at a time which greatly reduces efficiency as with the RoRo one 2 may enter and leave at once, that 4 vehicles in play an efficiency boost of 400% if used constantly.

Routes can be created with the addition of one way roads in a recent nightly, see OpenTTD Wiki: One way roads for more details. Routing is essential if you want an efficient station. At the moment the best stations I can create for busy road stations is 150-200% as you have to force lorries in and out in 1 direction. If 1-way RoRo stations could be created where road vehicles used both sides of the road in one direction this would boost it up to 300-400%.

So the two key points are:
- Don't use Terminus stations
- Always route traffic

Traffic Congestion
To create a good station you need to have enough bays now this is individual to each instance of a road station and must be played about with accordingly.

My station concept requires minimal station walking but not in the traditional sense it requires a 1 tile space between each station and its neighbors.

When stations are completed delete walkers.
Then place roads to link stations and link roads through the gaps you created
For this next image I expanded my station slightly

This as you may have noticed doesnt have routing and so I will build in routing West to East.

Exits and Entrances
Where to put them in and pull them out! This decision is one of the most important as it determines whether traffic piles up or flows smoothly

I so far have found that Big stations require a different pattern to little ones. For big stations it is good practice to put vehicles in at one corner on one side and pull them from the opposite corner like so.

Also I find it is good practice to note at both ends of Entry/Exit roads the direction in which they travel

This is my design for a small industry pickup (for a big pickup copy the above design scaling station numbers as required)

In most cases where 3-9 lorries are using this station the one way road piece can just be normal road.

If the Exits/Entrances don't work well, try placing them centrally on the station sides

Real Examples
Courtesy of Public Server game 52 (which as I am writing this is in action) I have a couple of my real stations

Firstly a big pickup at a forest. Some may argue it doesn't need to be this big and I would agree but as I built it with the aim to accommodate the level of trucks in service it's just right and looks alright. It also has a second entrance coupling this was to more evenly distribute lorries as they seemed to pile up on the first row of stations

And this is the resulting drop, unusually it has a small forest attached which has another station with lorries running between the two and it is smaller than the pickup but copes well with a good flow rate.

Final Word
Of course I only have my experience so far and will be investigating these items further to further increase the quality of this guide but I hope you have found it useful. feel free to improve this guide with your own thoughts

<< Back to Index

Now Road stations arent a big part of OpenTTD Coop's games but they do have their uses thats why I am writing this guide

2 Key Points
First things first since the RoRo road stations were introduced it is much better to use these than terminus stations. A terminus road station is as inefficient as a standard terminus rail station. 1 vehicle may enter and leave at a time which greatly reduces efficiency as with the RoRo one 2 may enter and leave at once, that 4 vehicles in play an efficiency boost of 400% if used constantly.

Now I have had my little rant about RoRo and Terminus I will proceed to my second point, routes.
If 1 way RoRo stations could be created where road vehicles used both sides of the road in one direction this would boost it up to 300-400%.

So your two key points
- Dont use Terminus stations
- Always route traffic

Traffic Congestion
To create a good station you need to have enough bays now this is individual to each instance of a road station and must be played about with accordingly.

My station concept requires minimal station walking but not in the traditional sense it requires a 1 tile space between each station and its neighbours.

In most cases where 3-9 lorrys are using this station the one way road piece can just be normal road

If the Exits/Entrances dont work well try placing them centrally on the station sides

Real Examples
Courtesy of Public Server game 52 (which as I am writing this is in action) I have a couple of my real stations

Firstly a big pickup at a forest. Some may argue it doesnt need to be this big and I would agree but as I built it with the aim to accomodate the level of trucks in service its just right and looks alright.

<center>Oneway or Twoway Presignals?</center>
Signals have two sides, in the basics part, the other side wasn`t important, since trains can`t turn back, etc. etc... But in more complex things, a badly placed twoway Combo Presignal can make errors in your network.

Part 1: The Station entrance problem with two entries
In this station the combo presignal can make errors, but can you notice why? If F-H presignals are green then Combo presignal C´s upper-right side is green too. Then if D and E exit Presignals, is red, then A Entry presignal remains green. The problem´s source is: Presignals calculates Signal Blocks, not the Possible chosable tracks: from A trough C and reach F-H platforms is impossible, but presignals CAN see this!

How to fix this? Just change the Combo Presignal C to oneway or add an oneway Combo Presignal after it, like in the next picture:

With this Entry Presignal A cant look for Platforms F-H.

<center>Presignal Basics</center>
The Presignal Basics is explained here: how they work, how they behave, and how does work a terminal station, and whats the use of the combo presignal.

Part 1: Identify the signals
There are five type of signals in OTTD. If you click on a normal signal with CTRL is held, these signals will appear:

Normal Signal: It doens`t have any special alibity, it turns to red if the next signal block is blocked by any train.

Entry Presignal: It works like a normal signal, plus it turns to red if all exit presignals, or combo presignals are red after it.

Exit Presignal: It works same as normal signal, but it signs for the entry, or combo signals, if self is red.

Combo Presignal: It have Entry and Exit presignal alibities both: It turns to red if all Exit/Combo are red after it, and it signs for the Entry/Combo Presignals, if the self is red.

PBS Signal - removed type of signal: Not a Presignal, it enables more trains in one signal block, since PBS means Path Based Signaling. This type of signal isnt explained here. PBS is dropped out of from nightlies due of its annoying bugs.

Part 2: The Station Problem
Stations without any presignals have a big problem: just have a look on the Image to the below. Signal A should be red...
If you let one more train to enter into the station, it will block the exit, because A signal is green. This problem is solvable with presignals: Just turn A into Entry presignal, and turn B and C signals to exit signals. How does it work? If Exit Presignals B, C are both red, then Entry Presignal A is red too. Then a third train cant pass trough Signal A.

Part 3: An Effective RoRo station
Combo Presignals are mostly placed between Entry, and Exit presignals, because the Combo Presignals transmits the Exit presignal signs fot the Entry Presignals. Combo presignals behave as an entry presignal and an exit presignal both. In the Image above, signal A is Entry Presignal, signals B, C, D, E are Combo ones, and F-K signals are Exit Presignals.

If F and G Platforms are used, then Combo signal B uses his Entry Presignal alibity, and it will turn to red, because F, and G Exit Presignals are both red. But the Entry Presignal A is remains green. Exit presignals H-K are green, then Combo Presignals D, E is green, then Signal C is green too. With this Combo Presignal B is red and C is green, then the Entry Presignal A is remains green.

The Entry Presignal A will be red only, if all Platforms are used, Exit Presignals F-K are red. If F-K are red, then all Combo Presignals B-E are red too, then the Entry A will be red.
